RFID Inventory Management

RFID and QuickCheck™ Patron Self-check Units

QuickCheck™ self-check stations can process EM security strips, barcodes and RFID labels, as well as read patron cards in credit card or key tag format with bar code, magnetic strip, and RFID coding.  EM security control is complimentary to RFID inventory management.  Libraries do not need to purchase a self-check unit with RFID initially.  Sentry offers the choice to purchase the QuickCheck™ and add RFID functionality at a later date.  Once the library is RFID ready, the self-check unit is simply upgraded with a RFID reading module.  The Sentry program will work with any ISO standard RFID tag.

Conversion to RFID Using Self-check

Sentry's method of conversion to RFID uses Staff Workstations and QuickCheck™ self-check stations to write data to the RFID labels.  No other conversion equipment is necessary.  The following is a brief description of how to add RFID labels into the circulation process:

  1.  Add blank RFID/EM labels to the collection gradually as each item is processed at check-in.

  2. This method assumes 80% of circulation comes from 20% of the collection.  As a book is checked out the staff workstations and the self-check stations will look for the RFID label.  When the station identifies the blank label, it will use the information from the barcode to pull up the circulation information and write data to the RFID label.  When the RFID label is found with information, the self-check or Staff Workstation will use that information to check-out the item.  The transition stage is transparent to the patron and the library staff.

  3. Self-check stations and staff workstations will also deactivate the EM security strip during check-out and reactivate the strip at the point of check-in.

  4. Staff can continue to write blank RFID labels using the QuickCheck™ system or Staff Circulation Workstations.

  5. The EM Antennas at the point of exit will look for the EM strip and will alarm if the book or other library item has not been properly checked-out.

EM/RFID Readers

Sentry offers several options including RFID only, and RFID combined with barcode scanning and or security tag deactivation/reactivation.  This applies to books, magazines, CDs, DVDs and Videos.  The transactions are processed by the librarian at a work station or patron using QuickCheck™.

  • Readers are incorporated into a pad placed in, on, or under the counter at each station
  • Readers have a range of up to 40 cm
  • Readers will detect multiple items presented at one time

RFID Hand Held Readers

Sentry Technology portable readers have a lightweight design for taking shelf inventory.

Features include:

  • Read range of 6" (15cm)
  • Use wireless communication with a range of 1500-2100 feet with direct communication
  • Specially designed to ensure reading of all shelved material (including thin items like CDs, DVDs, and children's books) on all types of shelves

EM/RFID Tags

The EMM/RFID combi-tag is a one step application label, consisting of a EM security strip and a RFID tag.  The combination tag is an integrated circuit (IC) chip mounted on a RF coil and a EM strip applied to a single self-adhesive label.  Labels can be customized with the name and library logo.

  • Multiple sizes; 40mm square, 30mm + circles (designed for CDs, DVDs)
  • Special magnetic media labels are available for videos, audiocassettes, and multimedia kits
